Scope of work: Build
a 468-foot long by 25-foot wide timber vehicular bridge over
Bynum Run, the 100-year flood plain, and a utility easement
to provide construction and residential access for a hilltop
condo development.
Three types of spans were utilized for the bridge:
- Conventional stick-built construction
for 393-linear-feet with pile bents on 16-foot centers, and
each bent containing five Class B timber piles driven to
bedrock and cross-braced;
- One 52-foot span consisting of eight 14-inch x 30 1/4-inch
glue-laminated timber beams strung between pile bents topped
with 6-inch thick dowel-laminated transverse deck panels;
- One 23-foot span with 14-inch thick dowel-laminated
deck panels attached directly to pile bents on either side.
Other features include cast-in-place concrete abutments on
spread footers, a heavy-duty curb and guardrail system, and
asphalt paving over a waterproof membrane.
To lessen environmental disturbance, equipment and materials
crawled across the site on temporary timber mats that
were moved as construction progressed. The final result was
a timber bridge that fits into the landscape. |
